What is Crown Thinning?
Crown thinning is the removal of smaller / tertiary branches, usually at the crown’s edge.
The goal is to achieve consistent foliage density and an evenly spaced branch structure. Crown thinning works well on non-coniferous trees like birch, oak, cherry, and sycamore. Crown thinning has little effect on the tree’s overall size or shape.
Material should be removed in a systematic manner throughout the tree, not exceeding the indicated proportion and not exceeding 30% overall.
Crown thinning allows more light to enter through the tree, reduces wind resistance, reduces weight – but not necessarily leverage on the tree structure, and is rarely a one-time operation, especially on species known to produce a lot of epicormic growth, like lime.
