Property: A historic hotel with extensive landscaped grounds, featuring a prominent avenue of ornamental trees.
Challenge: To carry out extensive reduction, thinning, and precision pruning on 21 mature Cherry Trees (Prunus spp.) to enhance safety, aesthetics, and natural light while maintaining the grandeur and health of this iconic feature.

A leading Liverpool hotel approached Northwest Trees & Stumps with a multifaceted challenge. Their stunning avenue of 21 flowering cherry trees—a key part of the property’s visual identity—had matured to a point where they were causing several issues:

• Encroachment & Safety: Upper branches were contacting the hotel’s façade and roof guttering. Lower canopies obstructed pathways and vehicle access for deliveries and events.

• Dense Canopy: Years of growth had created a thick, congested crown structure on each tree. This blocked significant natural light from the ground-floor restaurant and terrace, dampened the vibrancy of under-planting, and increased wind resistance.

• Aesthetic & Structural Health: The trees required skilled shaping to retain their elegant, spreading form while removing deadwood, crossing branches, and weak unions that could fail.

The hotel needed a vendor who understood the horticultural art of ornamental pruning as much as the science of tree surgery, ensuring the work enhanced the venue’s luxury appeal.

Our consultation identified that a one-size-fits-all approach would not work. Each tree required individual assessment and a bespoke application of three core techniques:

• Primary Objective: To implement a holistic crown management program that improved safety, increased light penetration, and revitalised the trees’ health and form for the long term.

• Prescribed Techniques:

  1. Crown Reduction: A careful, proportionate reduction of the overall canopy dimensions, taking height and spread back to appropriate growth points. This cleared the building and restored a balanced silhouette.

  2. Crown Thinning: Selective removal of inward-growing, congested, and weaker branches throughout the crown. This critical step reduced weight, improved light filtration and air circulation, and decreased wind sail.

  3. Formative/Detail Pruning: Precision pruning to remove deadwood, rubbing branches, and sucker growth, and to shape the overall aesthetic framework of each tree.

• Execution Strategy: Our team worked systematically down the avenue, treating each tree as an individual specimen. We employed meticulous climbing and cutting techniques to ensure every cut was deliberate, clean, and promoted correct healing.

• Team & Ethos: A dedicated team of our most experienced ornamental tree specialists operated with a core principle: maximum impact, minimum visible intervention.

The project was scheduled over two days to minimise disruption to hotel operations. Our team’s workflow was a model of efficiency and consideration:

1. Pre-Works Coordination: Detailed walk-throughs with hotel management to agree on access, working hours, and protection of high-value landscaping features like rose beds and lawns.

2. Surgical Pruning & Rigging: Climbers worked through each tree’s canopy with hand tools and pole saws, making precise cuts. Where larger limb reductions were needed near the building, light rigging was used to lower wood safely and silently.

3. Real-Time Processing & Cleanliness: As arisings came down, our ground team immediately processed them through a whisper-quiet, compact chipper. All debris was bagged or chipped on-site, with no piles left at any time.

4. Final Site Sanitisation: Upon completion, the entire avenue was blown clean with back-pack blowers. The hotel’s terraces, pathways, and lawns were left entirely free of debris. The only evidence of our work was the beautifully sculpted trees themselves.
